這本詩選，集結了英美文學中最高意境的代表，是文學和哲學雙重的瑰寶。這些代代相傳的詩作，是人類理想、價值觀的最高表現。
我們在選輯的時候，盡量選擇能夠朗朗上口的詩作，把這些詩當作中國古典詩詞的英文版來朗誦。我們所設計的朗誦課程，並不特別著重在背頌，而是希望孩子們能夠輕鬆地朗讀。為了確保發音正確，這份英文詩歌朗頌教材還附有CD光碟，並採用各種童聲錄製讓語音清晰，教材和光碟應該搭配使用。
我們相信，及早接觸這些詩作，將是孩子們一生受用無窮的心靈寶藏。從語言學習的角度來說，比起照本宣科的傳統語言學習，這是更好的學習方式。因為孩子同時吸收各層次資訊的能力，其實超乎成人的想像。以輕鬆的方式進行團體朗讀，詩的意義會自然湧現。在以這種朗讀的方法指導孩子時，家長和老師不用擔心孩子能否了解詩中字裡行間的意義，因為詩的真意會在孩子的心靈需要時自然浮現。這種朗讀學習的方式已經經過時代的長久考驗，和其他領域的新教學方法，例如鈴木音樂學習法，本質上並無不同。

What follows is a collection of poems, which we deem representative of the highest exponent of English literature. They are true literary and theological gems. Through them one will find the highest expression of human ideals and values, passed down through generations.
These poems have been compiled for recitation purpose. They represent our English counterpart to Chinese classics. Through the recitation program, we ask our children to recite them leisurely without worrying about memorizing them. To facilitate correct pronunciation, these recitation materials should be used in conjunction with the accompanying CDs. These CDs were carefully produced using different children’s voices to enhance clarity.
We are confident that upon retaining the contents of these poems, our children will acquire a lifetime’s treasure of inspired teachings that they will certainly use later in life. We find this method of teaching languages far superior compared to the traditional methodology that presumes a sequential gradation in the learning process. Instead, the method used here presumes that the child will absorb large amounts of information in a simultaneous manner that often confounds any adult’s preconceived expectations. It is as if, through leisure recitation done in unison, the poems suddenly come to life. We have found that through this methodology parents and teachers need not worry so much about the child’s grasp of the contextual meaning of the poem being recited; the meaning will naturally become clear to the child in time. This method, used through countless generations of the past, is no different than the newer methods of teaching in various other areas, like the Suzuki method of learning music, for example.
This kind of recitation has been used by millions of children worldwide. We are happy to say that the positive results are overwhelmingly encouraging, and we urge you to persevere with your child over the next few months and years.
