Over the millennia, Cordyceps has been treasured in Asia as one of the most effective natural tonics and body harmonizers. It mysteriously grows in the winter as a parasite fungus feeding off caterpillars and as grass in the summer through its emerging fruiting body, making it known as "winter worm, summer grass".

Legitimate Cordyceps sinensis species
The Hirsutella sinensis mycelium from Chang Gung Biotechnology has a 99.645% similarity in rDNA sequence alignment compared to the Hirsutella sinensis species in the global gene database—the genuine asexual-phase species of Cordyceps sinensis (Biochemical Systematics and Ecology 2001. 29:597–607).
